I just turned 52. Whenever I celebrate a birthday I like to set a personal goal for the upcoming year. Sometime during the next 12 months, I want to learn how to turn on the TV. We have a satellite TV set-up with a DVR which can record shows, and a BluRay that can play DVDs. We also have about seven remote controls that, used in combination, require the skills of a computer programmer to turn on the TV.

I have repeatedly asked my kids to show me how to use these devices. They proceed to cram 20 minutes of instruction into three sentences, dance their fingers over various buttons on the remotes, and the TV comes alive.

The next time I want to watch TV, I have absolutely no concept of how to turn the thing on. Sometimes, I will sit and stare at a blank screen waiting for one of the boys to come by and turn the TV on for me. Once I sat on the sofa for 16 hours before I remembered they went away for the weekend.
