CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — State records show that West Virginia agencies lose more than $500,000 worth of computers, furniture and other items every year.
WOWK-TV (http://bit.ly/t1xZAa) says documents from the state's purchasing division show the value of the lost items totaled more than $1 million between 2009 and 2010.
Every state agency must list any piece of inventory that it cannot produce if it's worth more than $1,000 and has a useful life of at least a year. But some items aren't actually lost. Sometimes they're just listed incorrectly.
Two computer servers at the Department of Education, for example, were listed as lost even though they were returned after they'd been purchased. Still, education accounted for $536,777 worth of the total, with missing items including notebook computers worth more than $3,200 and projectors worth nearly $5,400.
"I'm not comfortable with it," said the agency's chief financial officer, Terry Harless.
